Trust Your Master (Teacher / Coach / Trainer…)

Updated: Nov 17, 2024

As a student, it’s imperative to trust your coach.

Do you remember the movie The Karate Kid?

My generation will remember Mr Miyagi and a younger generation will remember how Jaden Smith’s character (Dre Parker) was taken under the wing of Jackie Chan’s (Mr. Han).

What stands out for me wasn’t the penultimate scene where the good guy beats the bad guy. It’s the training.

The student (almost) blindly follows the instructions of their Master. Whether it’s ’Wax on, wax off’ or the famous take-the-jacket-off-and-put-it-back-on scenes, doesn’t matter much.

What matters is that the student heeded the instructions with the faith that it’ll help them to reach their goals. The trusted the process AND their leader; without really knowing or understanding the outcome.

Yes, being a good leader, manager or coach is a very strong focus these days; but how many people can truthfully say that they are aiming to be a good student?

Find your mentor/master. Place your trust in them. Follow the process.
